Since 2012, the VENICE INTERNATIONAL PERFORMANCE ART WEEK is the globally renowned platform dedicated to promoting and exploring performance art. Focusing on the production and documentation of the ephemeral and immaterial, the project showcases archives of seminal pieces alongside live programs of performance works of emerging and established artists. Held in Venice, Italy, each edition centres around a specific theme and format, as performance art is rooted in a strong sense of communing cultural, social, or political urgencies and conjuring momentum. With its community-based and artist-run curation, the project has gained international acclaim for supporting artists working in this critical and experimental medium. The project is committed to contributing to the ongoingness of the lineage and the evolution of performance art as a living tradition, social practice, and pivotal driver for cultural change.

Portals and Constellations, addresses the theme of social connection through the lens of performativity. In times of crisis, individual behaviours are transformed by options and alternatives that seem drastically reduced, obstructing prospects for more inclusive futures. Portals are thresholds of critical utopianism, liminal places between the here and now and the not-yet-here. They are entry points to other worlds and new ways of being.

Under Scars is envisioned and devised by the artist duos VestAndPage (Verena Stenke & Andrea Pagnes) and Marianna Andrigo & Aldo Aliprandi in collaboration with Irina Baldini, Sabrina Bellenzier, Giorgia de Santi, daz disley, Nicola Fornoni, Marisa Garreffa, Fenia Kotsopoulou, Ash McNaughton, Aisha Pagnes, Enok Ripley, Sara Simeoni, Mauro Sambo, Joseph Morgan Schofield, Marcel Sparmann and Emily Welther.
Under Scars is a gathering of experienced artists and performers who challenge their practice to attempt novel perspectives on art and society. It is a collective work that gravitates around the themes of disability, severe diseases, addiction, patriarchy, capitalism, abuse and discrimination. The wounds and stigma they cause are dealt with poetically through performance actions and artmaking rituals of kinship and togetherness. On this occasion, Palazzo Mora’s main hall and six adjacent rooms transform into a dwelling site of interconnected performance installations, where temporary, intensive co-creation processes aim to reveal the qualities of existence. The hosting space functions as a social-narrative incubator wherein performance methods are intertwined for coagulating inclusive and expansive life stories. The collaborative performance unfolds as it builds on sustained encounters of different artistic research combined with performative practices. As the title suggests, the artists now gather to unveil precious experiences of vulnerabilities, hesitations, fragilities, hopes, the unspoken they carry under their cicatrices, and wounds healed by performing. Memories and experiential transformation processes entwine and collide to respond poetically to present emergencies.

COVID-19 has drastically changed the way we tell, interpret and communicate our stories to others. After two years of inactivity compelled by the pandemic, the Venice International Performance Art Week returns with a residential project, which arises from the need to re-form a temporary artistic community in a physical space similar to a blank page. In these precarious times, resuming artistic collaboration in proximity means returning to imagining not only which future environments we expect to live in, but above all identifying the sources of inspiration we seek and the most suitable tools to be able to implement our desires.

December 6-16, 2017, at European Cultural Centre | Palazzo Mora, Venice
With CO-CREATION LIVE FACTORY Prologue 1, the VENICE INTERNATIONAL PERFORMANCE ART WEEK headed in a new direction in 2017, following the closure of the Trilogy of the Body in 2016. Founded on the principles of artistic collaboration, cooperation and temporary artistic community, CO-CREATION LIVE FACTORY Prologue 1 is born to be an artistic experience of a different kind. The aim in 2017 was to empower 75 participating artists from 28 countries selected through an open call, to articulate and develop their individual praxis within an independent temporary autonomous zone of co-creation. In a residential setting and under the tuition of the artists Marilyn Arsem, VestAndPage and Andrigo & Aliprandi, and with morning lectures by Robin Deacon, Jill McDermid & Erik Hokanson, Preach R Sun, Marcel Sparmann, and Elisabetta di Mambro. The culmination of this 10-day co-creation process was open to the public on the days December 14-16, 2017: transforming the ART WEEK venue European Cultural Centre | Palazzo Mora into a dynamic performance site through a series of collective performance operas, as well as collaborative and solo performances.
The Trilogy of the Body live art exhibition project consisted of Hybrid Body – Poetic Body (2012), Ritual Body – Political Body (2014) and Fragile Body – Material Body (2016). The project aimed to promote the practices of performance art on a local, national and international scale, with an exhibition and live program exclusively dedicated to them, and the related Learning Program presented in cooperation with international partner organizations. Each of the three editions of the Trilogy of the Body, consisted of a comprehensive exhibition showing historical performance art pioneers' works and documentation, alongside the presentation of live art performances by contemporary established and emerging international performance artists. The program was structured as such: daily morning talks by and encounters with the participating artists, associated curators and cultural operators open to the public; series of long durational performances during the afternoons; and shorter performance slots in the evenings. The ART WEEK | FRINGE section is dedicated to upcoming and emerging artists, both local and international. For each year's edition, VENICE INTERNATIONAL PERFORMANCE ART WEEK and VestAndPage press publish limited edition post-event hardcover catalogues documenting the exhibition and live performances, with essays on performance art-related issues by international scholars.
